Chapter Nine

KOVE

I couldn’t stop feeling the sticky warmth of Nova’s blood dripping between my fingers and hearing her cries of pain. I had been around enough carnage to last a thousand lifetimes. I thought I was numb to it, yet the sight of her blood coating the table in the medical bay of the SevenWolf shook me to my core.

“You know you don’t have to do that,” Guinea said softly.

I glanced over my shoulder at the woman. Her bright yellow hair waved in the slight draft from the overhead circulation vents. The sight of the tea set she held on a tray made me shudder involuntarily.

“Someone’s got to do it,” I replied. “It might as well be me.”

I tracked her steps as she walked around me to the other side of the table. I pushed another disposable towel across the metal surface and then threw it in the garbage along with the others.

“I made you some tea,” the woman offered.

I shook my head. “No, thank you. I’ve had some ill effects from your concoctions if you care to remember.”

She gave a half-smile I saw out of the corner of my eye. “When will you forget about that? Whoever said Smirens had excellent memories wasn’t joking.”

I sprayed some interesting-smelling sanitizer onto the table and wiped away the last of Nova’s blood. It calmed me to see it clear and clean. I stared down at my reflection in the metal surface. My gaze looked as unsettled as I felt. No wonder the woman was trying to drug me.

“You really need something,” she coaxed. “When was the last time you slept?”

I blinked at the question, truly thinking about it. The last time I remembered actually lying down to sleep had been in the Dark Universe. Since then, trying to track down my attackers and getting in contact with Sigmian meant constant vigilance dotted by a few quick snoozes here and there in the cockpit of Lord Fay’s hopper. During my meeting with Nova on the Trayshan and the following flight to save her life, sleep had been the furthest thing from my mind. How long ago was that?

“We left Nova at the House of Lords and Ladies two days ago,” Guinea said in answer to my unspoken question. Her high voice went even higher when she asked, “Have you slept since then? According to Lord Fay, you’re planning to fight in the arena as soon as the Dark Matter drive is refilled so we can jump to the Bacarian System. Kaj and Junquit have that under control. Don’t you think it would be a good idea to get some sleep before a battle?”

I really wanted to argue against her logic, but she was right. I shot her a searching look. “Why do you care so much?”

She gave me a half-smile that looked more sad than happy. “Somebody’s got to make sure you’re taking care of yourself, and Nova’s not here to do it.” Her voice gentled and she said, “The House says she’s healing.
